Here's Why the Pros Use Keyboards For Gaming

For some, gaming is not just a way to pass time or kill boredom - it is a way of life. Pro gamers take games very seriously and this is actually a competitive career to go into. This is why they do not use the normal controllers for competitions as well as practice runs. The real pros use keyboards to play games, some because it improves their gaming and others simply because they are easier to work with. No gamer wants to be fussing with a controller when battling opponents in Counter Strike.  If you’re a gamer but still use controllers for gaming, stepping up to a professional level may require an upgrade to a keyboard instead. The truth is, pro gamers know that a keyboard will determine whether they have a great game or a just-okay game.

Types Of Gaming Keyboards

Gaming keyboards come in two main types, namely, mechanical keyboards and the rubber dome keyboards.

Mechanical Keyboards

This is considered the best keyboard type you can find today. Not only does a mechanical keyboard help you play better, but it also feels good using it. With metal springs and individual key switches, this is the go-to keyboard for pro gamers who prefer quality over affordability.

For one, they are very durable so once you get your keyboard, you will not be needing to replace it anytime soon. Mechanical keyboard switches typically last for up to 50 million keystrokes. This makes them perfect for when you’re pounding and finishing off your opponent.  Compared to rubber dome switches which have a life cycle of 20 million keystrokes, this keyboard type is preferable for pros who need to practice often as well as engage in several games professionally. Be sure to get one you really like so you don’t have to be stuck with an ugly keyboard for a long time to come.

Furthermore, because mechanical keyboards are designed such that there are switches beneath each keycap when you press down on a key, you are going to hear a clicking sound to confirm that it was actually registered. This helps ensure you don’t miss a key when gaming. Some mechanical keyboards come with linear switches which you need to press all the way down before it is registered. On the other hand, some have tactile switches that do not have to be pressed all the way and only require you to push them about halfway down. This is enough to give a reassuring mechanical click indicating the key was activated. That way, you don't spend so much energy on each key and can move to the next one as quickly as possible.

Pro gamers need every second they can get and there is really no time for errors. Mechanical keyboards are more reliable as they ensure accuracy with each keystroke.

Although keyboards are generally better for gaming, the mechanical keyboard has an edge over its rubber dome counterpart.

Rubber Dome Keyboards

A more affordable option, rubber dome keyboards are common and don't offer the satisfying typing experience you get from a mechanical keyboard. Also known as membrane keyboards, these are very popular today amongst low-budget gamers and although they do not come with certain gaming features you can find on the mechanical keyboard, it does serve its purpose as a basic keyboard.

Membrane keyboards do not have springs and instead use rubber domes to provide feedback to the gamer.

Benefits Of Using A Keyboard For Gaming

The conventional way of gaming using controllers is fast losing its popularity since keyboards have a lot more to offer. Although a few games may be better played with a controller, most games such as role-playing games and real-time simulations are best played using a keyboard. Let’s look at some other reasons why pros prefer using a keyboard rather than a console.

In a gaming competition, literally every second count. If you’ve ever tried aiming at a small object using a controller, you know all too well how difficult and time-wasting it can be. Keyboards give you a better aim by far as you can easily point at a target and destroy the unfortunate thing. Pro gamers greatly value this factor as the last thing they need is to get frustrated in the middle of a heated game.

These refer to the WASD or ESDF keys that are configured as action keys. You may not know this because you’re still using controllers – see why you need an upgrade? Hotkeys or keybindings are used to move characters and allow for easy movement from one key to the other because of their arrangement. Someone using a controller will more likely spend more time switching from one control to the other while a keyboard is easier to work with.

In addition, there are more advanced hotkeys that enable gamers to perform multiple actions with just one keystroke. These are called macros and can significantly increase your speed in carrying out actions. Macros need to be set up to carry out your preferred actions which will follow a particular order. This means that you can set up your hotkeys to perform 3 or 4 actions each and a simple stroke will shorten the time you would have spent on stroking each key individually.

Gaming Experience

In general, gaming with a keyboard gives you a great feel and offers much more satisfaction than a controller ever would. Plus, keyboards are generally easier to use.

The pros don't just use any keyboards for gaming competitions. Although getting a great gaming keyboard will not automatically make you a great gamer, to compete with the best, you must come up to standard in terms of the type of keyboard you use.
